Little Gifts

Just wanted to share some fun gifts to make!

The first are altered clothespins. For the glittered ones you'll simply cover one side of the clothespin with glue and then sprinkle some Maya Road glitter on top.

These ones are so fun...cover one side with glue and sprinkle glass beads on top. Allow to dry and then spray with Maya Mist!

I like to add a strip of magnet to the back. Decorate a glassine bag and tuck your clothespins in!

The Maya Road Small Organza Roses Ribbon makes a perfect headband. Cut a piece of the trim the length you'd like and hand sew a small piece of elastic on both ends.

Most Blessed 545th Post Ever!!!!

I just noticed on my blog home page that this is my 545th post and I couldn't be more happier!!! Sixteen and a half years ago I was laying in a hospital bed not even caring if it was my last day on earth...I was so, SO sick.

Here is the link to the story

Now here I am posting a Christmas gift I just made for my Mom and Dad. I remember talking with my neurosurgeon after my brain surgery and I told him that I wasn't planning on having any more children after this "brain" ordeal I went through and he seemed disapointed! He is sure happy to know that God added two more to our family! I couldn't even imagine a day without Andrew and Emma.

God is SO good.

I even get to share a layout of me and my hubby...we've been married for 18 and a half years.

Enjoy today, I know I will :)

Magnetic Scrapbook Page!

I often take a picture that I would love to scrapbook right away...but time usually isn't on my side so they often get left in the "to do" pile. With this magnetic board I can quickly add a title, some simple journaling or a favorite quote to match my picture and it's done just like that. When I've got some time I can then make a page using what is already on my magnetic board!

To make a magnetic board you'll first need to purchase a round pizza pan from your local dollar store...you'll want an inexpensive one because magnets don't stick to the expensive/heavy ones!

Next decorate the tray...I used papers and embellishment from the Basic Grey Hello Luscious Line from the LCOM store!

Then add magnets to the back of a clothespin and Basic Grey Wheels...

Finally, add your title, picture and journaling!

Treasure Card How To

I had the pleasure of crafting with the American Crafts Campy Trails collection from Let's Capture Our Memories.

Here is a quick "how to" on my treasure card...

For card base trim pattern paper to measure 4 X 5 1/2. Cut out three circles.

Cut a piece of pattern paper to measure 4 X 2. Sand edges (the paper I used was embossed). The sanding tool I used is made by We R Memory Keepers and it is fabulous! One of the best things is the little handle to hold onto :)

Now this is my favorite part of the sander...this little edge distresser...it's two tools in one and plus it is pink :)

Distress the edges of circles and add to the front of card with foam squares.

Using American Craft Thickers (Campy Trails Vanilla) add sentiment to front of distresed 2 x 4 pattern paper. Add this to the front of card.

To complete my card I added a little banner border from the Campy Trails collection.

Covered NotePad Tutorial

These covered notepads make a perfect little gift! They are very quick and fun to make :)

The Supplies:
notepad (mine is 3 7/8 X 6)
pattern paper
embellishments
paper trimmer
adhesive

The Instructions:

1. Trim pattern paper to measure 6 X 8 1/4.

2. Score at 4 and 4 1/4.

3. Attach notebook on the right hand side of pattern paper.

Embellish as desired!

New Layout and Cards!

The Shabby Chic Crafts Notecards and Artisan Frames are a perfect addition to your layouts! I made this layout about my nephew Logan using some fun papers from the American Crafts Confetti collection. I added a little Maya Road Crystal Star to this joyous layout as well!

For my "Hi" card I used American Crafts Confetti paper, a Shabby Chic Crafts Artisan frame, and a Prima flower in lime green!

The Shabby Chic Crafts Envelopes help you make a quick card that looks great...you can complete the look when you add a little hidden journaling card in the envelope! The Prima pink and lime green flowers match the envelope perfectly :)

Prima is making the cutest birds...you will love these on your cards or layouts (the script ones I used on my card are sold out but make sure you check out the Rose Print ones...they are beautiful)! The Shabby Chic Crafts Vintage Moments tags make a very classy accent to your projects. For the base of the card I used My Mind's Eye Hazel/Mother Meadow paper.

Mini Book Tutorial!

The Supplies:
corrugated cardboard
cardstock
embroidery floss
pattern paper

adhesive
needle

The Instructions:
1. Trim two pieces of corrugated cardboard to measure 3 1/2 X 4, as well, cut a piece of cardstock to measure 2 X 4. Glue your corrugated cardboard onto your card stock as shown...making sure to leave at least 3/4 of an inch in the centre.

2. Cut a piece of pattern paper to measure 2 X 4 and use to cover the piece of card stock on the outside of book.

3. Fold mini book to form a spine.

4. Trim three piece of cardstock to measure 4 X 7 and fold in half. Place one piece of folded cardstock inside the book, along the spine, and poke holes using a push pin along the fold line...make sure that you push your pin through the spine of the book as well.

5. Handsew the cardstock page to the spine. Repeat with the other sheets of cardstock.

The book is now ready to be decorated!

Paper Bag Flower Tutorial

I haven't done a tutorial in so long and
I figured it was about time!

These little flowers are simple to make
and best of all they are made out of
paper bags!

Supplies:
paper bag
stapler
circle punch
water

1. Punch circles out of a paper bag...I used about 9 circles per flower.

2. Staple in the centre.

3. Apply water to paper bag cirlces...you want to make sure all the layers get water on them.

4. Crunch together.

5. Peel the layers apart and mold with your fingers until you achieve your desired look!

I added mine to a layout...

JetPen Test Ride

I was asked by Jet Pens to try out some of their pens! I've been a pen lover for as long as I can remember and I LOVE to try out new ones!

The first wasn't a pen but a mechanical pencil, a Zebra Color Flight C to be exact.

The first thing I loved about this one was the colour...

I always do my hand written journaling in pencil first so this was a perfect one to start with. This pencil has a nice weight, super grip, and best of all...a twist eraser!!! My number one complaint about mechanical pencils are the tiny erasers but this one goes on and on...you'll love it!

The next was a gel ink pen made by Pilot. The Pilot Hi-Tec 0.5 was truly amazing. The ink comes out so smoothly and the nib is very precise.

I put this one to the test by first writing on top of Maya Mist and it didn't skip a beat. I then tried it on top of paint...I was amazed, usually when I write on paint the pen ends up skipping, not this pilot!

Just to make sure that it truly wasn't going to skip I wrote my grocery list with it...

I long for this...a new year, a fresh start.

This year my word is "focus".

I need to focus.
In 2010 I wasn't focused and I hardly did what I love to do.
I love to scrapbook.

It is my goal to finish a 52 Pick Me Up this year.

I printed out a "Log Your Memory" calendar and I can't wait
to get started on that...this will help me focus.

I'm looking forward to an amazing new year!

15 years ago.....

today I was laying in an ICU awaiting emergency brain surgery.

Looking back to the 16th of December 1995 it was to be a day of celebration. My in-laws were about to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Breanne, who was about 6 months old at the time, had the most perfect red plaid dress for the festivities. I woke up early in the morning to the familiar headache on the right side of my head and an ear that had gone practically deaf. I made it up the small flight of stairs in our town home and landed on the couch which would be my home for the next several hours. We only had one vehicle and my in-laws, who were in town from Tulsa, Oklahoma, were borrowing it at the time I had decided a trip to the emergency ward would be the best place to get a prescription for something, anything that would take this six month headache away. We phoned my parents to drive me but they totally thought I was faking it LOL! Rick, my husband, was supposed to give a toast at his parents party and he totally didn't want to...they saw this as "his out"!

We decided that because I could no longer stand on my own that an ambulance would be the quickest route to getting that prescription! I arrived at The Foothills Hospital early in the afternoon on December 16th only to be told that "there were sicker people here than me so I could wait for that codeine". I had no problem waiting as I was basically comatose. Many hours later I finally received that pill and was almost discharged...we would make it to the anniversary party! I got up to use the bathroom and I collapsed. The nurse decided to call neurology for a consult. Within minutes I was under a CT scanner and was told if they didn't find anything the next step would be a spinal tap. I prayed that something would be found on that CT scan because a spinal sounded very painful. Sure enough, a tumor the size of a baseball was found on the left side of my brain. Rick called my parents, who were at the anniversary party, to tell them that they needed to come back to the hospital and speak to the neurology resident. The same nurse who told me that there were sicker people in the ER was called to start my IV. I laid in that small bed thinking I was going to die.

Before I knew it I was in the ICU. The neurosurgeon, Dr. Sutherland, soon arrived to let me know he would be removing the tumor the next day (which was a Sunday) as I wouldn't make it until Monday.

I'm pretty sure I got a bit better drug than the codeine I was hoping for as I was so out of it! The last thing I remember was being taken down to surgery with my husband at my side and finally in the room where the surgery was to take place. There was loud music playing in the room..this struck me as very funny!

Several hours later I woke up and I was the most thirstiest I've ever been in my life! My husband spoke to the anesthesiologist who told him that they lost me for a bit...my heart breaks when I think of this news and feel very happy to be alive.

I felt so blessed to have a wonderful family around me as I learned to walk all over again.

Each year I reflect on the 17th of December on how my life was saved. The MOST amazing part of this and my most favorite is the fact that 4 years later I surrendered and trusted Jesus with my life. Praise HIM!

In all honesty I never thought I'd be here 15 years later...a happy, loving marriage and three completely amazing children. Dr. Sutherland asked me if I wanted to have more children after Breanne and I said "no!". Am I ever glad that God proved that wrong :)

Fall Fair on Saturday!

I'm so excited to share that I'll be selling cupcakes at the Gellatly Nut Farm - Fall Harvest Fair! The weather for Saturday seems like it will be perfect for a fall fair, about 23 degrees :)

I'll have pumpkin cheesecake, caramel apple, chocolate hazelnut, maple walnut, and chocolate orange cupcakes all ready to go!

Here is some more information about the harvest fair (borrowed from Castanet)...

BC's oldest nut farm hosts the annual, Fall Harvest Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park just off Gellatly Road in West Kelowna.

Volunteers from the Gellatly Nut Farm Society will also be on hand selling nuts and trees from the orchard.

As well you can check out the booths displaying the works of local artists and the produce of local farmers!

[a] Photo Cube Tutorial

These photo cubes are so fun to make that I had to share them with you ♥ They make a very cute alternative to giving a card!

Supplies:
12 x 12 sheet of patterned paper
trimmer with scoring blade or stylus
scissors
double stick tape
embellishments, photos, punches, etc.

1. Using the ruler on your trimmer, measure in 2 3/4 of an inch from the left hand side of your paper and make a cut stopping 3 1/4" from the bottom.

2. Turn card stock 90° and insert paper into trimmer to measure 3 1/4". Measure 2 3/4 of an inch from the top, insert your trimmer blade and cut until you reach the bottom of your paper and you are left with an "L" shape.

3. Starting with the side of your paper that is 2 3/4 of an inch wide (place paper in trimmer like a backwards "L"), score at 1/2", 3 1/4", 6", 8 3/4", and 11 1/2".

4. Turn card stock to score that other side at 2 3/4", 5 1/2", 8 1/4", and 11".

5. Hold your paper to form an "L" shape and trim 1/2" off of the right hand side.

6. Trim the corners and tabs as shown.

7. Decorate as desired.

8. Add sticky back tape to the tabs, form your cube and you are done!

I've been promising my Mom that I'd make her a book to store her take out menus and it finally happened! It is my parents 39th Wedding Anniversary in a couple of days so I thought now would be a perfect time to make it for them. It was so fun to make that I couldn't help but share a how to! Enjoy :)

Supplies:
chipboard
pattern paper (about 4 - 12 X 12 pieces)
cardstock
paper clip
3 X 3 Post It Note pad
3 inch strip of ribbon
letter stickers
pen
adhesive
paper trimmer
X-Acto knife
Zutter binding system, binder rings, or ribbon

Steps:
1. Trim your chipboard pieces, one to measure 6 X 11 and one to measure 7 X 11.

2. Trim your pattern paper to measure 7 X 12 and 8 X 12. Adhere these using Elmers Spray Adhesive to your chipboard. The 7 X 12 piece goes with the 6 X 11 chipboard and the 8 X 12 goes with the 7 X 11 chipboard.

3. Miter the corners of your paper. Fold the sides of your paper to go around the chipboard. Adhere these sides to the chipboard.

4. Trim two pieces of pattern paper to measure 5 3/4 X 10 3/4 and 6 3/4 X 10 3/4. Adhere the 6 3/4 X 10 3/4 to the inside of your 7 X 11 chipboard.

For the 5 3/4 X 10 3/4 paper, using an X-Acto knife, make a small slice the width of your paperclip at about 6 inches from the top and 2 7/8 in. Insert your paper clip and adhere pattern paper to the 6 X 11 chipboard. For added protection, attach a 3 X 3 piece of cardstock under your paperclip.

5. Bind your portfolio either using a binding system such as a Zutter or you could use binder rings or ribbon.

6. Cut a piece of pattern paper to measure 3 X 9. Score at 2 1/2, 3, 6, and 6 1/2 inches. Fold on score lines and attach Post It Note pad in the centre. Fold over to protect your Post It Notes and keep in place with a Velcro circle. Decorate as desired.

Fold your ribbon in loop that is wide enough to store your pen and adhere to the back of your covered Post It Note pad.

7. Adhere to the inside cover of your portfolio.

8. Trim a piece of pattern paper to measure 6 X 6. Fold the top down and apply adhesive to keep in place.

Trim two pieces of cardstock to measure 2 1/2 X 5. Score at 1/2", 1", 1 1/2", 2", and 2 1/2" and accordion fold. Apply these pieces to the left and right backside of your pattern paper.

9. Apply adhesive to the accordion folds and the bottom of your pattern paper and adhere to your covered 7 X 11 chipboard piece. Use clothes pins to hold in place while it dries.

The little banner was so quick and fun to make that I thought I share a little "how to"...

1. Punch (or cut out) several isosceles triangles out of paper, the Fabric Finish papers by Dear Lizzy punched just beautifully! Fold over the top or the widest portion.

2. Staple onto embroidery floss and trim off the extra paper. This works great because you can move your banner pieces around before gluing them down on your project!

My daily to do list was getting very boring and mundane so I thought it needed some sprucing up! What can be more inspiring that a ginormous flower so I put my thinking cap on and went for it :)

lil' Owlet Tutorial

I made this little owlet yesterday and thought it would be fun to share how to make her! It makes for a quick and easy summer project :)

Supplies:
Fabric (Snapdragon Soiree, Tickled Tulip, and Firefly Festival fabric from the American Crafts - Dear Lizzy collection)
2 croqueted flowers (American Crafts - Dear Lizzy)
2 large white buttons, 2 small black buttons
small piece of orange felt
embroidery floss, needle
scissors, pencil, glue
pattern

1. Print out pattern on cardstock and cut out the three pieces. Trace 2 body pieces on fabric (the American Crafts sticky back fabric works perfectly because you can trace on the paper backside) and cut out.

2. Trace one tummy piece and cut out.

3. If desired separte the sticky paper off fabric for the body pieces. This will make it easier to stuff the owlet.

4. Stick down the tummy piece to the front body piece and straight stitch around to keep in place.

5. Blanket stitch about 1/2 way around your owl and stuff. I used tissue paper but next time I'm going to use a softer stuffing :) Only stuff the bottom portion of your owlet as we'll need to fold over the top portion for the head.

Everytime I want to do a blanket stitch I totally forget how LOL! So I watch my favorite blanket stitch video on YouTube...

6. Fold over the pointed top portion of the owlet and sew on a large croqueted flower, a large white and a small black button for each eye. Trace and cut out beak and stitch on at this time as well (not shown).

7. Stitch the head down to keep in place. I used a little bit of glue as well.

Your owlet is now complete!

A Weekend to Remember

A lot happened a year ago this weekend! For one Rick and I were celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary and two there was a huge forest fire pretty much across the street from our house...it was scary but it all turned out fine, praise God!

Today Rick and I are celebrating year 17! I just finished making a layout about our 17 years for the American Crafts blog dimension challenge!

I raised the frame around the entire layout and also added some foam dots

to the back of the 17 to give it a little pop!

I lifted the flowers a bit to give a little shadow.

I really wanted the I love you. I adore you. to be a focal point in the corner

so I added some foam dots and then gently turned in the corners.

The next layout was for the Summer 2010 issue of Canadian Scrapbooker.
It`s about the forest fire from last July 18th.

Journaling from layout...

2:00 ~ My husband and son were about to leave to go kayaking on Lake Okanagan when they noticed a lot of smoke. There was a small fire burning behind Gorman’s Mill so they decided to postpone their adventure. The flames grew and very shortly after the blaze began chemical bombers were flying over our house. We did not feel threatened as the wind was blowing in the opposite direction.

4:00 ~ The fire soon became very large and the canyon below the fire where we live filled with smoke. Chemical bombers began flying over our house every couple of minutes; it was soon becoming a losing battle. The heat and winds became very intense and we could hear explosions in the distance. 4:25 ~ Many helicopters now arrived at the scene; they were passing over our house and water from their bags was raining down on us.

The fire was steadily climbing up the mountain towards Glenrosa where about 11,000 people were being quickly evacuated from their homes. The children were getting nervous and began packing their much loved animals – a rabbit and two guinea pigs. My husband and I kept everyone calm reminding them about the huge highway that separated us from the inferno; the same highway was now closed.

5:30 ~ We prayed that God do a 180 with the wind as praying for rain seemed beyond reality. We found out later that the bible camp in Glenrosa was praying as well.

6:00 ~ Suddenly there was a strange calm about the air as the winds completely stopped. The children and I were in the backyard cheering on the helicopters to show our support while hubby was on the roof watching, like a lookout. Being concerned about the mill he decided to ride his bike up our street. He soon returned home to report that a frantic neighbour was running down the street, screaming “my backyard is on fire”. The wind had changed. A friend fighting the fire at the mill said it was like the wind changed and hundreds of little fires started across the highway in an instant. We heard sirens and a loud speaker “this area is under IMMEDIATE evacuation”. Our fears were intensified when we realized that we only had one way out and that one way could be surrounded by flames in minutes. I had packed nothing. The girls rushed their animals into the van while I frantically grabbed what I could…a bible, my first scrapbook, and a quilt.

6:30 ~ We were in the van driving away in complete shock; the road heading towards the lake was jammed with traffic. Everyone including police cars and fire trucks were trying to keep from getting blocked in. Looking back we could see the fire engulfing trees next to the traffic. We sat in silence for a moment, prayed aloud, and cried a bit.

7:40 ~ Finally we arrived at my sister’s house in Kelowna. We hugged and cried, and the only thing that was said for a couple of moments was “your house, your house.” Followed by, “wow you all stink!”

8:30 ~ We were traveling to my parents house in Chilliwack. A trip that would normally
take three and a half hours took seven as we traveled the long way because of the highway
closure. We arrived just after 3am.

Three days later we were traveling back home. We drove along the now opened highway
a little more slowly than usual to see the area where the fire had jumped across. I
hadn’t cried for days until I saw a sign that a mill worker had put up it read “welcome home
Westbank.” We drove down Gellatly Road and saw a house burned to the ground. A minute
later we were sitting in our driveway thanking the Lord that we were home safe and sound.

a welcome sunrise and flower tutorial

This morning, very early (5 am early), Bre and I headed over to my parents new house and took a picture of the sun rising. They didn't take possession until noon today so we had to sneak onto their front deck...luckily it's vacant right now ;)

I rushed home, printed out the picture and added it to the frame that I had already made. Then I wrapped it up, drove back to their new place and left it at their front door so when they arrive later on today they'll get their first house warming gift, I do feel pretty sleepy right about now LOL! We are truly blessed because a couple of months ago they lived just over 3 hours away...now it's only 5 minutes!!!!

Tissue paper is so fun to add to your scrapbook pages or cards! I wrote an article for the spring issue of Canadian Scrapbooker about adding tissue paper to your projects. Here is one of layouts that appeared in the article....

For a quick way to make a tissue paper border first cut a strip...

Fold in half and then half again...

Free hand cut a scalloped edge...

Now your ready to add your border to your project. I hand stitched mine on with black embroidery floss.

This little project is my entry for the

American Crafts blog challenge!

I thought it would be so fun to bring a friend a treat

with a card attached...a cup card :)

To make this very easy project, first the trace a cup sleave onto your pattern paper and then embellish! You could even get the children helping you out :)

thought it would be a good idea to

have an extra *everyday* one handy!
